AI Can't "Read the Room" Today. But in 2030, It May Know How You Feel Before You Do.

Today's AI cannot read a room. But the convergence of neuromorphic computing, quantum biological sensing, and multimodal foundation models suggests that by 2030, AI may be able to detect your emotional state before you consciously register it yourself. The security implications are significant.
Neuromorphic Computing: Processing Like a Brain
Current AI architectures struggle with the continuous, messy flow of human interaction. The future may belong to neuromorphic engineering, hardware designed to mimic the structure and function of the human brain. Spiking neural networks could allow tomorrow's AI to process the real-time temporal dynamics of micro-expressions, vocal inflections, and physiological shifts with far greater efficiency than today's systems allow.

Quantum Biological Sensing: Beyond What the Eye Can Fake
Researchers have already demonstrated that quantum diamond sensors can record the faint magnetic signals generated by neuronal action potentials in living mammalian tissue, without any physical contact with the subject. As this technology becomes more portable and scalable, autonomous systems could potentially detect the electromagnetic correlates of emotional arousal before any visible physical response occurs. There is no training yourself to suppress what your nervous system is already broadcasting.
Multimodal Foundation Models and the Horizon of AGEI
Foundation models are already restructuring the architecture of affective computing, enabling systems to synthesize multimodal data streams in ways that earlier emotion recognition tools could not manage. The logical extension is systems that integrate personal history, real-time environmental data, and the sequence of preceding events to reason not just about what you are feeling, but why.
These developments point toward what emerging theoretical work has called Artificial General Emotional Intelligence, or AGEI: systems equipped with an advanced Theory of Mind capable of attributing mental states and intentions to humans. Security professionals need to be part of that conversation now, not after the technology is deployed.
