Article 2 — Aerial Advance Work: Using Drones for Route Reconnaissance, Venue Assessment, and Movement Overwatch

Aerial advance work is not a replacement for ground-level advance work. It is a complement that addresses the specific limitations of ground-based reconnaissance: the inability to see over obstacles, the time required to physically check extended routes, and the difficulty of maintaining continuous situational awareness during a movement.
What Aerial Advance Work Actually Means
Aerial advance work is the structured use of drone assets to support the planning and execution of principal movements. It is a targeted intelligence collection activity with specific questions to answer: Is the planned route clear? Are there unexpected obstacles or infrastructure failures? Is the venue configured as expected? A drone that goes up without a specific collection task generates imagery, not intelligence.

Route Reconnaissance and Venue Assessment
In complex urban environments or post-conflict terrain, route reconnaissance from the air addresses limitations that ground advance work cannot overcome efficiently. An aerial asset can provide a near-simultaneous picture of the entire planned movement corridor, identifying road damage, unexpected vehicle concentrations, protest activity, or infrastructure failures that would require rerouting.
Venue assessment from the air provides information that is difficult or impossible to obtain from ground level: the true layout of approach and departure zones, the location of rooftop access points and vantage positions, and the presence of anomalies in the immediate perimeter.
Movement Overwatch and Practical Constraints
Movement overwatch provides real-time situational awareness that ground-based communications cannot replicate. The overwatch asset can identify developing threats, confirm route conditions ahead of the convoy, and provide early warning of anomalies that require a response.
Practical constraints shape what aerial advance work can deliver. Airspace regulations, weather, battery endurance, operator certification requirements, and the need for communications integration all affect what is achievable. The discipline is in matching the capability to the specific operational requirement rather than deploying drones because they are available.
