Moving "Left of Boom": The Strategic Value of Protective Intelligence
By J Damien Scott, Trusted Advisor
Executive targeting incidents doubled in 2025. A corporate security program that relies solely on gates, guards, and guns is not just outdated. It is a critical vulnerability. Protective intelligence moves the organization left of boom by identifying, assessing, and dismantling threats before they cross the threshold of the enterprise.
The concept: what “Left of Boom” actually means
The phrase originated as a U.S. military idiom during the conflicts in Iraq and Afghanistan. It described the strategic effort to disrupt insurgent cells before they could build and plant improvised explosive devices, rather than simply up-armoring vehicles to survive the blast. The focus shifted from hardening the target to dismantling the threat before it could be assembled.
Translated to the corporate sector, the “boom” represents the critical incident: the physical attack on an executive, the catastrophic data breach facilitated by a disgruntled insider, the active shooter event, or the coordinated reputational campaign that collapses stakeholder trust overnight. Traditional physical security operates right of boom. Modern corporate security must operate left of boom.
“Protective intelligence turns protection from guarding a body in space and time into managing an adversary’s decision-making process weeks or months before an attack.”
From the Secret Service to the boardroom
Protective intelligence grew out of the protective operations developed by the United States Secret Service. The agency recognized that surviving an assassination attempt was largely a matter of luck. The only reliable way to protect a principal was to reduce the attacker’s ability to get close enough to strike, and that required understanding the attacker’s intentions and planning process far in advance.
In the corporate context, PI is defined as the investigative and analytical engine that continuously identifies, assesses, and mitigates threats to people, facilities, and operations before they escalate into harm. A mature corporate PI program monitors high-profile individuals, critical facilities, brand reputation, travel environments, and the behavioral indicators of insider threats.
The business case: why proactive security is a strategic imperative
Action is always faster than reaction. Scientific studies on armed attacks consistently confirm a stark reality: once an adversary initiates an attack, the victim can only react. Betting the safety of personnel and the continuity of the business on the ability to react perfectly in a fraction of a second is not a security strategy. It is a gamble. Anticipation is the only true defense.
Unprepared companies forced to manage a crisis spend millions of dollars in direct mitigation costs while losing hundreds of millions in shareholder value and brand equity. Protective intelligence enables dynamic, efficient resource allocation: resources deploy where the intelligence indicates they are needed, not where tradition or assumption suggests they should be. In this way, PI transforms the security function from a traditional cost center into a measurable driver of organizational resilience.
